Today is the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Due to the tilt in the earth's axis, the sun is shining directly over the Tropic of Cancer- its northern most point. The sun's migration has been moving northward since December, and today, it will change direction and start to move south again.
In many Native American traditions, the summer solstice represents a time a of "High Ceremony." The dynamic energy of the planet is at its peak in the northern hemisphere. It is a optimal time to connect with this energy to awaken your vision through ceremonies like Vision Quest, Medicine Wheel, and Sun Dance. It is time to dance your dream awake.
Ceremonial Native American dances at Pow Wows enact this beautifully. (You owe it to yourself to go to a Pow Wow this summer to experience this.) After today, this dynamic energy will surrender itself to a gentle, receptive energy allowing us to unfold our new life.
In my tradition, the summer solstice is found in the south on the Medicine Wheel. It is time of activity and learning. In the spring time of the east, we created the intention of what we wanted to create this year. As we move to the south we need to explore our new beginnings and help them to take form and become realized.
The south and summer on the Medicine Wheel carries the energy of adolescence- in that we are still awkward with our new ways and figuring out how they work. This is why the primary element of the south is trust. We need to trust ourselves to take risks and dance outside of our comfort zone so we can learn a new way to live. The totem of the south is the coyote, or trickster, who tricks us into looking at the things that we do not want to see about ourselves. He helps us to see beyond the illusions of our old ways.
What are the new aspects of yourself that you are looking to dance awake this summer?
