Yes... it's a quote from The Matrix. And it is very dated. But it is still one on my favorite movie quotes. I always thought of it metaphorically as the world of appearances cannot tell you who you are. Nor can anything outside yourself, for that matter.
Yet where is the first place we look to get a sense of ourselves? We try to see how we fit onto the world around us. We define ourselves in relation to things outside of us. The problem is many of the things and dynamics outside of
ourselves are not real or substantial- at last in terms of defining ourselves. They are the next trend or clique- which is fine. It is just no way to define yourself though modeling after or relating to.
To get a sense or who yo are or what you are about, you have to instead go inside. Find a way to get quiet. Meditate. Journal. Express. Feel. Go on a contemplative walk. Hang out in nature. Nature is one of the few things that you can define yourself in relation to.
So next time you are going though a change in phase of life, career, or relationship. Spend some time with yourself. Take some time to redefine yourself. Ask yourself what is important to you now- in this phase of your life. It has likely changed since the last time you did this.
Then when you interact with people or the world, share that sense of self with them. Offer up who and what you are. It is the ultimate gift. You are giving instead of taking. Then we don't have the blind leading the blind. And you don't get lost in the matrix.
