One way to envision the healing process is think of emotional issues as trapped energy. Sometimes we are not able to complete the emotional experience at the time it happens because it was too painful, shocking or traumatic, and the energy gets trapped in our body. And there it stays until we allow ourselves to experience the feeling so it can complete itself and release.
Trapped energy often occurs with childhood abuse, sexual trauma, grief, combat PTSD, or any experience that is too painful, intense, and overwhelming for us to process at the time. But over time our life situation becomes more safe and we become stronger, until one day something inside of us
decides that it is time to heal.
So we may start having nightmares or experience raw feelings come to the surface. This is often terrifying and painful and out first tendency may be to avoid it. The doctor or therapist may tell you it is a symptom of some disorder. But from a healing perspective, although scary and painful, this may be an prime opportunity to heal an old emotional wound.
Often the trapped energy releases one small pocket at a time. So you may be watching Silver Linings Playbook and experience this pocket of raw emotional energy that seems to come out of nowhere. If you can allow yourself to feel it and talk to someone about it, you can release it once and for all. There may be numerous pockets that release with one traumatic experience, but each time you allow yourself to feel it, you have healed another portion of it.
The healing process happens naturally and all we really have to do is allow it to happen.
