Got a tyrant keeping you down? Whether it is at a workplace, relationship, family or country, oppressors and abusers of all types have one thing in common- they keep you isolated. Isolated from supervisors and the rest of the company. Isolated from friends. Isolated from the rest of the world. Because, if they keep you isolated, they can control you. They keep you from new possibilities and opportunities that would free you from their grasp. They keep you from information that would allow you to connect. That way, they can construct a distorted reality for you to reside in.
In today's world there is no reason to be isolated.
Technology and the internet make information and connection so readily available. Dictatorships are falling- Egypt being a current example. Facebook and the internet allowed Egypt's people to communicate and organize in a way like never before. Being oppressed was no longer acceptable to them.
Another example of using isolation to control can be found in abusive relationships and families. Get together with girlfriends is discouraged. Children going to a friend's house for a sleep-over is not permitted. For if the oppressed sees that the rest of the world is not like their relationship or family, the control starts to break down.
So whenever someone is withholding information from you, it should be a red flag. If they are insisting you go through them for no good reason, it should raise an eyebrow. If they are blocking you from communicating and relating with other people, watch out.
So if you are ready to break free, reach out and connect with other people. This will empower you. You will no longer depend on your oppressor. You will begin to see things more clearly. You will see opportunities. You will be invited to be part of healthy groups and interactions.
Together we stand, divided we fall.
