A New Spiritual Orientation

Jun 12, 2023

Video Summary:

When we go through a significant change in our lives our spiritual orientation changes. What I mean by spiritual orientation is where we see the world from and what part of our mind and being are we using to navigate the world.

An example includes moving from an intellectual, perceptive, and upper chakra orientation where you see things as they are. You see your truth, your connection to life, and the illusions of who you thought you were. You may realize, “Oh, life is very different and much larger than what I thought it was.“

These upper chakra awakenings tend to happen first with most people, but not everyone. We start integrating and embodying our newly-awakened truths. We bring them into our relationships, jobs, families, and day-to-day lives. We're plugging them into our lives and applying them.

A heart-centered orientation tends to be quite a bit messier than the perceptual and conceptual upper-chakra orientation. It’s totally experiential and requires trial and error to see if things work. You can't read it in books. what awakens is this heart and solar-plexus chakra, relational orientation.

In the upper-chakra orientation, things just are. It’s just clear. When we drop it down to a more relational orientation, it's more intuitive and we're feeling our way through life. So when we talk about or describe it, we’re left with using a lot of metaphors such as, “It's kind of like this, or it feels like this.”

This is because we're trying to describe this thing that we're experiencing or feeling intuitively. And there are not often linear, logical, rational words to put to it. It's like trying to describe a spiritual experience or something that you're intuiting, discerning, or feeling.

Figuring out how things work can feel awkward and vulnerable- almost like adolescence. In this new orientation, we don't really know how life works. It's a different world and we're different. The rational, intellectual things we used to don't work down here. We have to find a new way of navigating life.

The other thing that happens when you change your spiritual orientation is having to rewire your brain. The way you used to access your brain and mind to articulate things changes. It used to be more intellectually oriented, and now it's wiring itself differently.

We start creating more intuitive, heart-centered connections inside ourselves. This is not always a graceful and comfortable process. It can feel like you are not very articulate. or not able to describe what you're experiencing. You forget things. It can feel like you're going crazy or not as smart as you used to be.

This can be very disorienting (hence changing your orientation). At times I have thought, “What's wrong with me? Am I getting early-onset dementia? Am I losing my mind? Am I not as smart? Perhaps I’m getting some new disease or disorder. Maybe I developed some super-complex ADHD or something.”

What may be going on is you’re just reorienting and rewiring your brain. Allow yourself compassion. Allow yourself to go through this vulnerable, awkward, and sometimes frustrating process. It's like experiencing a new birth or pushing through the eggshell.

In time you will start reconnecting, rewiring, and being able to articulate what you're experiencing more naturally. It'll be different. I really encourage people in the sharing circle and sessions to stay with what they are trying to express even if feels like they're not making any sense or able to get to the point.

When people say, “This is ridiculous.” I might say, “No, finish that out. Dig for words that describe the experience and what it's like. Just tell us what are you experiencing right now. Use the best words possible. Let go of being articulate or smart and just try to describe what it is you're experiencing.

Doing this is what helps you move through this transition. It helps you rewire and reconfigure yourself. And then you get to draw from both the upper chakra and heart chakra openings. They find balance. It just takes some time, practice, and compassion for you to relearn how to navigate life.
