A River Runs Through Us

Aug 22, 2022

Video Summary:

I want to work with a metaphor of a river flowing through us. When we walk with our hearts open, we allow ourselves to be emotionally touched by more things. We're allowing the energy of various experiences and relationships into our hearts. In this way, a river of life energy is able to touch us at a deeper level.

And as the river flows it encounters boulders in the stream. Extending my metaphor, the boulders represent wounds. They're incomplete experiences. You could think of them as these little packets of wounded energy trapped in the body.

When the river of the energy of the experience encounters these wounds, it creates a prime opportunity for healing. Just allowing your conscious awareness to touch these wounds of the past is powerfully healing in itself.

And then as you've probably noticed, we often get to feel the emotions that we didn't allow ourselves to feel at the time the wound happened. They could be wounds from our childhood, adolescence, or past relationships.

And when we open our hearts or allow ourselves to be touched in a relationship, all of a sudden, we're bumping into these boulders or wounds. If we allow ourselves to feel these wounds, it can be incredibly healing.

Sometimes we're feeling things that we obviously didn't want to feel the first time around so it may not always be a comfortable experience. I think often we look at these healing opportunities negatively. We view it as, “Oh, I got triggered," or, "I went into my stuff," or whatever else.

But there’s an opportunity to say, “Hello, old friend, I remember you. You're that wound that happened when I was in junior high when the cool kids wouldn't let me hang out with them. I guess I'm feeling you now because I didn't get invited to a party at work."

So my invitation is to allow yourself to feel it and allow the healing to naturally happen. Allow that river to flow through you and heal some wounds.
