Being Understood

Dec 19, 2021

Video Blog Transcription:

(00:00):
So I was doing this guided meditation the other day. It was actually a friend of mine named Anne Coughlin who does these really cool guided meditations. And the idea is to inquire with spirit and get wisdom from your spirit guides and from spirit.

And so I was talking about understanding. I was saying, you “It doesn't seem like people understand me. And I think that's maybe why I feel lonely sometimes.”

And it was really interesting what I got back, the answer back from spirit if you will. I heard, “Actually they understand you, but they just don't understand you the same way that you do." And for me, this was really profound which is probably why I'm sharing it with you.

(00:54):
And it totally made sense, because I've often realized that people can't truly understand me. People can't truly understand you. They haven't had the same life experiences that you have. They may not have the same level of consciousness that you have. So they can't totally understand you, you know?

And I get that. But what they can do, if they're trying that is (it is nice if they try to understand you for sure). But if I share how I am, and I'm really choosing to be honest and vulnerable and say, “Hey, this is how it feels to be Michael,” you know?

And they're trying to understand me, and they do understand me. And then they reflect that back to me and they say, “That's really cool, Michael. It seems like you're like this and this and this.”

(01:57):
So at that point, rather than saying, “Oh, well they're not understanding me the same way I am, so they don't get me. Waah, no one understands me.” Rather than doing that, I have a choice here now. I could say, “Okay, they understand me the way they do.”

And then it gets to be interesting, right? It adds a diversity of understanding. I already understand myself the way I do, it'd be kind of cool to figure out how someone else understands me.

So I can share with intimacy and honesty, and I can expose how I feel. And then I can allow someone else to understand me the way they understand me. Now I have richness and diversity. And then I can share that with someone else, and I can get a different understanding of how they see me, you know?

(02:56):
And so this can actually be a really positive thing. And I'm no longer (in theory, anyway, I wanna try this out). But in theory, I'm no longer gonna feel lonely, because I'm letting go of the expectation that they understand me the same way that I do.

And when I really think about it, that's probably more about getting validation or making up for my own dad didn't understand me or whatever else it was. We won't get into the psychology. But really with that, I'm wanting validation about my understanding. Or maybe I don't understand myself, so I'm trying to get someone else to do it.

But if I let go of that kind of insanity, if you will, and just say, “Okay, I wanna share myself, and then I'm gonna allow the person or people that I'm sharing myself with to understand me the way that they are able to understand me.

(04:00):
And then I get that reflection back which adds diversity. And I can even learn more about myself through the way they understand me. So hopefully that made sense. It made sense to me the other day. Hopefully, it makes sense to you. I think it's really cool.

So that is my video for this week. I hope that you've enjoyed it as much as I have, and I hope you have an awesome week and that you try maybe to allow people to understand you the way that they naturally do. So have a great week.
