Discerning Old and New Doorways

Jul 02, 2023

Video Summary:

I did a video blog four weeks ago that I called Two Intentions. The idea of the two intentions is that even though we're in a new space and have a new intention for our lives new, we may still have a residual old intention as well. We may have an old and new intention both creating doorways.

Our old intention is being generated sometimes unconsciously by our old patterns and issues. And so, even though we're in a new space, we could be experiencing old doorways. And you hopefully set the new intention this spring, at the beginning of the year, or just the other day.

Another resource includes Chapter 8 of my book, Natural Way of Being. In it, I talk about three types of doorways: new doorways, old doorways, and intermediate doorways, the latter of which may not be the ultimate doorway we're after but helps us to learn a lesson or grow so we can accept the new doorway.

For this video, I am going to simplify by referring to old and new doorways and discerning between the two. The first thing I would suggest is becoming familiar with your old pattern and intention which will help you identify the old doorways.

An example of an old pattern might be having a relationship with someone who is not emotionally available. And then they're not available to you which is unfulfilling.

So it's good to be aware of your old pattern. When I do retreats, sessions, and sharing circles, we spend quite a bit of time building awareness and insight around the old patterns. This is not because I want to focus on the old, but so we can steer clear of them. Awareness of the old pattern helps you recognize it.

The old pattern has an energy signature. It has a vibration and frequency. The way it vibrates and moves through the world has an intuitive feel to it. So in addition to understanding your old pattern rationally, it's also good to know how it feels energetically and intuitively.

So what's the feel of your old pattern? We may not want to tune into it as perhaps it has an icky feel or feels traumatic or upsetting because the old pattern likely caused us some pain. While we may not want to feel that, it's really good to know what it feels like to help identify an old doorway when it appears.

The new doorway is going to have an energy signature as well. Perhaps it might vibrate at a higher vibration and be more subtle. It has a different texture and vibe to it. So we're opening our heart and solar plexus chakras, so we can feel intuitively and discern the old from the new.

And if you're not clear on whether it’s an old or new doorway yet, you can start exploring. I like to use the metaphor of going to a party where all types of people, experiences, and conversations are present. Often we may get drawn to the old patterns first.

My teacher used to say the first thing you experience in a new space is often an old doorway, which is a little paradoxical. That doesn't mean the new people, experiences, and doorways aren't there, but we’re just not seeing them yet because they're not familiar to us.

So when we get drawn to old patterns and experiences, we can say to ourselves, “Hey, what's going on here? Let's talk a little more. It's a new face, but is it an old pattern? That's pretty enticing, but I know where that takes me.”

We might pass on a few of the old doorways, and look around saying, “Okay, so who else is here? What other people and experiences are at this party? Let's go talk to them.”

As we allow ourselves another experience we may say to ourselves, “Whoa. This feels different and a little strange. Even though it’s not familiar or comfortable, I’m going stay with this for a bit and see what's here.”
