Externalizing Beauty

May 02, 2022

Video Summary:

I want to talk about a tendency to externalize our beauty and our love by projecting it onto people, experiences, and things outside of us. We no longer see it as our love which can cause problems spiritually and emotionally.

An excellent example of this is when we fall in love. What often happens is that we meet someone that we see as beautiful and we experience love. It's really important to understand when we fall in love, it opens our heart, and we experience our own love.

We typically immediately project that love onto the other person. This becomes a problem when we no longer see it as our love. A healthy alternative is to view it as falling in love is allowing my love to come out. It's important that we don't externalize our love because then it excludes us from it.

Another version of this is when we're drawn to someone. Say you admire Maya Angelo. When you like Maya Angelo's poetry, it touches and awakens something beautiful in you. And that beauty is your beauty. Because you'd have no point of reference to appreciate her poetry if you didn't have that beauty in you. There would be nothing for her beautiful poem to resonate with, and it wouldn't feel beautiful to you.
