How are things?

Video Blog Transcription:

(00:00):

Our minds tend to construct a reality for us to experience life in. And then our mind imports the experience that we're in into that reality. So when we enter an experience, our mind immediately starts quickly micro-processing it and fitting what's going on into the constructs of our reality.

So what it begins to say is, “This is how things are.” Or better yet it might say, “This is how things are supposed to be. You guys are doing it wrong, this is how it’s supposed to be.”

But this really limits our ability to experience life. Because it leads us to view life as how we need it to be rather than how things really are.

(00:54):

So an alternative to this, rather than saying, “This is how things are,” is to kind of flip that on its head and ask, “How are things?” And the intention of this is pure discovery. It is: “I want to discover how things are in this current experience.”

But in order to do this, we have to be willing to let go of our assumptions and preconceptions. It may even be useful to let go of our reality so we can really experience what's truly happening in the experience we’re in.

So before we go into ceremony in our tradition, we say, “I am nothing. I know nothing.” Because then we can go in and see what's really there. So it approaches life and ceremony, which extends to life, as a mystery. It's rather than saying, I know what's going on here. It's kind of admitting, “I really don't know what's going on, but I'd love to discover what's going on and the wonder of this experience.”

(02:04):

A variation of this practice is to apply it to people. So rather than saying, “I know this person,” or “I know who this person is,” it's asking, “Who is this person?” And then we can discover who they are in that moment.

You can do this with the people you know really well. I mean you can do it with your significant other, best friend, or family member that you've known all your life. And you can still say, “Who is this person in this experience right now? Who are they?”

And I guarantee it will open you up to see beautiful aspects of these people you've known forever, and that you've not allowed yourself to see.

So that is my video for this week. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a really great week and that you allow yourself to see how things are in the experiences that you're in. I'll see you in a week.
