Intentional Smudging

Sep 27, 2022

Video Summary:

I want to talk about what's actually happening when we smudge. One of the misconceptions is that all the power and magic are in the smudge. And yes, sage and earth energies are very powerful, but we can't just light the smudge and expect the smudge itself to do its magic.

It’s much more powerful if we understand that smudging, like all forms of healing, is a partnership between us and spirit or life. You could say that spirit is providing the energy and we move that energy. It's this dance between our intention and the magic of the earth, sage, and Spirit.

There’s a real tendency to undervalue our own spiritual energy and attribute it to the sage. This also tends to happen with medicine objects in shamanism and healing objects in the healing arts. People think the feather, talking stick, or crystal has this magical power. And certainly, the objects do accumulate energy, but the medicine is in our hearts.

So the medicine or healing object becomes a channel for that energy. And the smudge becomes a channel for healing energy. So when I'm smudging something, it's my intention that’s directing Spirit’s energy. And so it's a collaboration, a partnership with Spirit.

It's really important to understand what my role is and what Spirit's role is. My role is to provide the intention and move the energy, and Spirit's role is to provide the magic and the healing energy. So I'm intending and spirit follows my intention. And so it's this dance in which we're working together.

We can err on both sides of this. Sometimes we may think, “Oh, it's just me that's doing the healing,” but then I'm limited to my own energy. Or we think, “Oh, it's God energy and I'm this lowly human,” but then it doesn’t flow through us. It's our intention and Spirit's energy that smudges collaboratively.
