Letting Go of How People Take it

May 16, 2022

Video Summary:

The other day someone shared how something that I said really touched his life. And, as he went on to explain it, I discovered that his takeaway was totally different than what I was trying to get across. I had to hold myself back. I almost was ready to say, "You didn't get what I meant by that." Thankfully I didn't do this.

So the trick is letting go of how people take the things that we say. We're responsible for speaking our truth. In my book, I call it my call for action. You allow energy in and let it drop down to your gut. Your intuition ignites and something comes to you. And then you know what you're supposed to say or do in that experience.

So your responsibility is to speak or act on your call for action which comes from inside of you. At that point, your responsibility is complete. It's releasing other people to take what you said or did however they need to. They may not get your point, and they may not be happy with it. It might even hurt their feelings.

One of the ways I think about this is with an artist. I used to own an art gallery and this would happen all the time. An artist would bring in a painting to show in my gallery and tell me the story of how she was inspired to paint it, what she was feeling, and her vision for it. And then I hang it on the wall and we do an opening.

And so the people come in, they have their glass of wine, and they're looking at this painting. And I'm like the fly on the wall behind the counter listening to how people respond to the painting. Most people love the painting, but it's touching them in a way that's totally different than the way it touched the artist.

But what matters is that it's touching people. That's what art does. And it's uplifting them. Just like my comment uplifted the other person. If we can just let go of how people take it...
